DO I NEED A HEARING TEST?

November 9, 2023

Taking care of our hearing health is one thing people tend to procrastinate.

We think “I’m fine for now. I should get a hearing test at some point but I can do that later.”

The problem with this line of thinking is… by the time we notice an issue with our hearing, it’s already progressed pretty far, and hearing loss is irreversible.

The good news is that prevention is cheap (or free) and takes no time at all—and it’s much more effective at slowing or preventing hearing loss and the accompanying issues (which can include things like cognitive decline and depression!).

When you don’t have good hearing, your quality of life can be drastically different. Think about everything you do every day where you take your hearing for granted: phone conversations, enjoying TV and movies, listening to music or talk radio.

By the time hearing loss is noticeably, significant irreversible hearing loss may already be a reality. Fortunately, there are simple, effective, affordable ways to monitor your hearing health and keep you living the life you enjoy for a long, long time.

Your local audiologist can quickly and easily check your hearing once a year to make sure your hearing is in good working order. As we age most of us experience some hearing loss, and the audiologist can detect it before we notice anything at all. Early detection is key, because there are ways to slow or stop the damage and prevent future hearing loss.

If you still need a reason to have your hearing checked each year, here are 7:

  1. The Mayo Clinic and other medical authorities recommend it.
  2. Hearing loss is not just a minor inconvenience: it can be a warning of other serious health problems, like cardiovascular disease.
  3. Hearing loss can exacerbate or accelerate cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  4. When hearing loss goes untreated, many people become socially isolated which can lead to depression and other mental health issues.
  5. Hearing loss can cost you money too—it can lead to problems with communication in the workplace and reduction in productivity.
  6. Annual hearing tests are speedy, simple, not invasive, and very often covered by insurance.
  7. Remember: your hearing health is a key portion of your general health. Take care of all of you—you’ll thank yourself later!

Take charge of your health–including your hearing—and you’ll benefit in more ways than one.

In just a few moments each year, you can do this one small thing that will give you peace of mind that you are doing everything you can to have great hearing (and quality of life) well into your golden years.

The first step to halting hearing loss and preventing further damage is to recognize your situation. Come in today for a hearing screening and formulate a strategy to train your brain to listen actively and effectively.
