June 21, 2021

Traveling is a wonderful adventure, and you can see so many beautiful new places. With hearing loss, however, there can be challenges. Here are a few things to consider.

Hearing Impaired and On the Road

When you have hearing loss, there may be unexpected challenges during travel, like difficulty hearing announcements, trouble identifying unfamiliar warnings like alarms, doorbells, and ringing telephones.

Lack of written signage or sign language may be another deterrent or can cause confusion in an unfamiliar setting. The best way to be prepared is to plan as much of your trip in advance so there are fewer surprises.

Planning

Many of these issues can be avoided with a little forethought and planning, so you can have the best travel experience possible.

Pleasant Travel Tips:

  • Travel agents can be very helpful in planning your trip and anticipating any special needs you may have. If possible, meet your travel agent in person before your trip to ensure good communication and thorough planning of all stages of your trip. Your travel agent can help you contact people at each stop make reservations and arrange for any specific needs.
  • Make as many arrangements as possible before your departure. Print out all reservations so you have the details, and notify a worker at each leg of your journey that you have hearing loss to guarantee sufficient accommodations.
  • Carry hard copies of maps, confirmation numbers, schedules, and reservations to ensure an effortless trip.
  • Make an effort to show up early and let attendants know you are hearing impaired. They can then inform you of relevant announcements.
  • Carry your flight number on paper and keep an eye on the scheduling screen so you are updated on any changes.
  • If possible, get aisle seats on airplanes to make communication easier with flight attendants.
  • Smile and be friendly! You may make a few new friends who will be happy to help you if you need it.

Travel with Your Devices

If you use hearing aids, a bit of preparation can ensure your trip is smooth and hassle-free.

  • If you have a dehumidifier for your device, it may be a good idea to pack it! Variations in weather can throw your hearing aids for a loop, so this can ensure it stays clean and dry.
  • Keep your hearing aid gear in your personal bag in the event your checked bags are separated from you for more than a day.
  • Bring extra batteries and supplies if you can, just in case you need them and can’t find them when you get there.
